Mateo Bar de Tapas
Chef Matt Kelly’s new Mateo Tapas was nominated as a semifinalist by the James Beard Foundation, just a few short months after opening. The only thing needed now was an interior design to match the eclectic mix of rustic Spanish-Southern fare. Heather Garrett Interior Design was hired to take the upper dining room of this historic building from dilapidated to extraordinary. Luxurious textures combined with reclaimed NC farm materials to land the look.
After the proprietor found an Art Deco bar in perfect condition, located for sale from its original establishment in Queens NY, he was inspired. For this venture, he would evoke his passion for early 20th Century American design, music, and culture. The designer’s 2010 eponymous retail store in downtown Durham. HGID is currently renovating a 4,000 sf commercial space…we can’t wait for the big reveal!
It’s about satisfying the senses, according to proprietor George Bakatsias. Providing simple, rustic food Mediterranean food using local ingredients…but presenting it in a distinctly modern, dramatic setting. George wanted this to be “a place to see and be seen”. New Mediterranean, in cuisine and design, seems to sum it up.
